New Scratch
New Scratch, Conor Curtis
I was thinking about a musical group who existed in the 1960′s and 1970′s from Britain called the Scratch Orchestra. They were mainly concerned with making modern, highly experimental music, open to the public. For instance they once performed a piece where they hung upside down from a tree playing Clarinets in one of London’s public parks (and before you ask no my idea doesn’t involve hanging upside down, or climbing anything). I have an idea to do something along the same lines though.
Essentially I’m thinking of having three or four musicians improvise (and by this I mean play anything they want) in a sort of conversation to each other, across a public space [Glynmill Inn Pond and West Street, Corner Brook, NL, Canada]. I was thinking of performing in a square shape across West Street (e.g. two performers on either side of the street improvising to their counterparts on the other side), across the Lake in a similar set up, and in the industrial area down by the skateboard park (but perhaps a little further in).
Request for participation:
As such I’m looking for volunteers? Skill level doesn’t matter; even if you can just play one note (or squeak depending on your level of ability), on a Saxophone (for instance) that you haven’t played in five years! The more people the better.
